Community Update - November 11, 2021

Dear Annville-Cleona School District Parent(s)/Guardian(s):

First and foremost, Happy Veterans Day to all who have served and sacrificed for our country.  We thank you for your commitment and service!

Next, I would like to address the ongoing topic of masks.  I understand there were mixed emotions yesterday upon hearing the mask order was invalid and based on the advice of our solicitor, we were advised to go back to our board approved Health and Safety Plan from August 9, 2021 which made masks optional for all students and staff.  We were hearing that the Governor would be filing an appeal, but we did not get official word that an appeal was filed until this afternoon.  Our solicitor’s understanding of the appeal process is that a stay is not automatically granted just because an appeal is filed; hence our email yesterday afternoon.

However, today, the court did now officially grant the appeal with a stay to the mask order (“supersedeas automatic”) which means effective immediately, all students and staff are required to wear a mask in school.

I truly am sorry for the back and forth, but we are working to ensure we are being fair to everyone on this topic.  Since there are many nuances and legal opinions, we must rely on the advice of our solicitor during these times and based on new information, the decisions sometimes change.

Thankfully, we have a great community that understands the difficult position we are in and our students and staff are very resilient.  We will continue to keep everyone up to date with additional information as it becomes available.

If you have any questions or concerns about the information contained in this letter, please feel free to contact me.

Professionally,

Dr. Krista M. Antonis
Superintendent
